my cat is pissed

When I found out that Science Diet was affected, I completely freaked out. Luckily, it only seems to be their "cuts" that are affected; everything else is made elsewhere. But, yeah I know what you mean; is it worth it to shell out the extra money when in the end it all seems to be made at the same plant. I hope they figure out whatever the hell it is and fix it soon. Sick kitties is a scary thing.
I finally have a reason to be thankful for only ever getting dry food (except for the occasional morsel of tuna).
My kitty only gets dry food, too, and now he feels lucky.

Scary stuff.

And mine have been getting dry only too. I re-confirmed with the vet a couple weeks ago (like I do every time I'm there) that I'm not a horrible pet parent for not giving them wet food. She said it's totally fine. Although I hate the name, my guys have been getting Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul for a while now. I think they're one of the few not on the list.

Yup, Clyde is off too. He's really had some dental problems and had switched to canned so that he would eat more - he's going on 15 and is a cranky old man. Then I had to get him some dry this week. Ugh. The Vet I work with had a 3-year-old dog come in with renal failure because of bad food. She cried when she put him down...
what i don't get is why wouldn't dry food be contaminated? if it's a fungus or toxin then wouldn't everything be contaminated? i'm no expert but this recall has me questioning the pet food industry.

and as if animal testing isn't an issue already, the company "tested" 40-50 animals and seven died. are they saying there was no way to run a test in a lab without feeding this stuff to other animals?

btw, i found an interesting article, "get the fact: what's really in pet food". talk about scary.
The vet had us switch to wet food for Romeo because, according to her, he's fat and dry food has more carbs. But now I guess he just can be fat for awhile. He LUVS wet food though, sigh. It is a trade off because apparently wet food causes more dental issues but since Romeo only has 8 teeth and he gets dental treats, he should be fine. You should see how crazy he gets for the dental treats. If we had to take him off of those he would wither away in massive depression.

I get the Rachael Ray magazine (yes, yes, she's annoyingly perky but I like the mag). She always has a meal that humans can share with their dog. I've always heard that human food isn't good to feed pets (although Romeo has had every meat you can imagine, kid you not...beef, chicken, pork, ostrich, venison, all manner of fish, guinea hen, pheasant, duck, etc...) but now pet food isn't good to feed pets either, sigh. AND it's filled with garbage. Really disturbing article, Ange.

Maybe I'll look into your hokey-branded Chicken Soup food, Laurel...
We're going to check out food at Raining Cats & Dogs on Huron in Cambridge. I think organic is going to be the way to go. We're trying to be more healthy, why shouldn't kitty be?
with one company making so many brands it makes you wonder if they're actually any different at all.

I told my mom about this and she said they use an organic dog food not on the list that you can buy in pet stores called Life Abundance by Healthy Pet, I'm going to look into it
It is so scary. I hope that you find some good organic food for Romeo.

So I have always fed my cats dry cat food. Leilah started to loose a little weight and I thought it could be because her teeth were bothering her. About a month ago I started to feed her wet food and she started to gain the weight back. (I am planning on taking her to have her teeth fixed but I will be in and out of town and want to make sure I am home for her.)

I thought Science Diet was okay--

Yes I wondered as well, if they are all made by the same company what is the difference--

Indeed this is scary. Our guys and gal get only Science Diet Light Throw up guard, or whatever it is called. We freaked when we saw science diet on the recall, but thankfully only the wet. This is all pretty frigged up.
The problem is that Menu Foods makes nearly all wet foods for most larger pet companies. So even though your Science Diet, Eukanuba or Iams might not be on the list, its still made by the same company...

Check out this NYT article.

We got some food for kitty at the organic pet store down the street. The brand is Wysong and it doesn't contain any chemicals or fillers. WOW does he love it even more than the Science Diet we used to feed him.
“Menu remains the largest wet pet food manufacturer in North America and its track record of safety and quality assurance has been strong.”

Killing 14 animals, no matter how few that is in the grand scheme, does not a good track record make. Suppose that were 14 kids. Pets = Children to many, many people, or at least family member. Argh, screw those bleeping bleeps!
Personally, I do think it's a decent track record. If you let your pet outside, it's probably much more likely to be killed in some other way. You think companies that provide food for humans are better? Remember the recent spinach and e. coli scare? According to a 1999 study "foodborne diseases cause approximately 76 million illnesses, 325,000 hospitalizations, and 5,000 deaths in the United States each year" (but that improvements in food handling are constantly reducing those figures). Why are some risks acceptable (like letting a pet outside or for people getting in a car or even just crossing the street) while others are less tolerable? While I do agree that there is importance for corporate safety, responsibility and accountability, expecting perfection is a bit much.
Not perfection. Letting a pet outside would lead to a natural disaster, most likely. Natural. Pet food killing pets is a fault of the company who should have safety and general quality in mind - accidents should be frowned upon. Letting a pet outside may also lead to uncontrollable risks. Pet Food, once again, should not be an uncontrollable risk. Anyway, that's my opinion.
When it comes to the food I feed my pets, I don't think perfection is too much to ask. At the very basest level, I should be guaranteed that what I buy from a pet food company is not going to KILL my pet. Pet food should not be ANY risk of ANY kind, IMHO.

And as for food for humans not being any better, that's the reason we stopped eating at chain restaurants, eliminated as much processed foods as we can, buy fresh, organic and local whenever possible, buy our meat/eggs without nitrates, grain fed, free range, etc. We're not freaks about it but I'm pretty sure that I've already extended life possiblities by ten years by doing so. I'm pissed at myself that I never thought about kitty's food in the same way. He shouldn't be eating food with all that crap in it, but since it was vet recommended I never really thought twice about it. Not taking any chances with that any more. If he died because of something I fed him, regardless of the circumstance, I would be a complete and utter wreck.
[this is good]

we've always given our cats organic food. thanks to marie who has pretty strong feelings about it (for people and animals).

but, funny enough, we have had discussions about letting the cats outside. one (oyster) just stays on the deck outside because he won't jump down from the gate. so he's OK. romeo, on the hand, is quite the adventurer and will go for hours and hours. i worry about this because many vets say that letting your cats out in a city is one of the most dangerous things a cat owner can do. still. romeo whines for hours if we don't let him out. it's also about quality of life: he is just a happier cat when he's able to go out, despite the risks.

but i agree that feeding your cat is different. i mean, the point is that you want to minimize the risks, and if you can stop feeding them tainted food, then DO IT. romeo could get in a fight and be injured. but keeping him inside locked up doesn't seem to be an option. feeding him clean and safe food is something easy enough to do!

hehe that last sentence I couldn't figure out if you were talking about your cat or my cat. My Romeo would be too terrified to go outside. He's perfectly content ruling the inner roost. Whew.
