my cat is pissed
But he can't have any because it might kill him.
And apparently, what ever it is in the food is more deadly to cats than dogs. Even worse, the deaths started happening back in February and it's only this week that the big recall came out. They haven't pinpointed what is happening. They only did the recall after they fed the food in tests to 40 to 50 more animals and found it deadly (!!!).
But what is really disturbing is that this pet food company, Menu Foods, seems to make every pet food brand on the planet. It's not like I can easily turn to another brand (unless it's kitty junk food like Friskies) to fill Romeo's craving. Instead, I have to worry about feeding him any type of wet pet food. It also makes me wonder--are the high-end pet foods worth the price if they are made by the same people that are producing the cheap grocery store white-label brands? Clearly some of the same ingredients are in both.
I feel really frustrated, stressed and angry about this. Last night I dreamt that Romeo was sick and throwing up all over the place. I was so freaked out in my dream. I just can't imagine anything happening to him, much less as a result of the hand that feeds him.

Scary stuff.
And mine have been getting dry only too. I re-confirmed with the vet a couple weeks ago (like I do every time I'm there) that I'm not a horrible pet parent for not giving them wet food. She said it's totally fine. Although I hate the name, my guys have been getting Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul for a while now. I think they're one of the few not on the list.
and as if animal testing isn't an issue already, the company "tested" 40-50 animals and seven died. are they saying there was no way to run a test in a lab without feeding this stuff to other animals?
btw, i found an interesting article, "get the fact: what's really in pet food". talk about scary.
I get the Rachael Ray magazine (yes, yes, she's annoyingly perky but I like the mag). She always has a meal that humans can share with their dog. I've always heard that human food isn't good to feed pets (although Romeo has had every meat you can imagine, kid you not...beef, chicken, pork, ostrich, venison, all manner of fish, guinea hen, pheasant, duck, etc...) but now pet food isn't good to feed pets either, sigh. AND it's filled with garbage. Really disturbing article, Ange.
Maybe I'll look into your hokey-branded Chicken Soup food, Laurel...
I told my mom about this and she said they use an organic dog food not on the list that you can buy in pet stores called Life Abundance by Healthy Pet, I'm going to look into it
So I have always fed my cats dry cat food. Leilah started to loose a little weight and I thought it could be because her teeth were bothering her. About a month ago I started to feed her wet food and she started to gain the weight back. (I am planning on taking her to have her teeth fixed but I will be in and out of town and want to make sure I am home for her.)
I thought Science Diet was okay--
Yes I wondered as well, if they are all made by the same company what is the difference--
Check out this NYT article.
We got some food for kitty at the organic pet store down the street. The brand is Wysong and it doesn't contain any chemicals or fillers. WOW does he love it even more than the Science Diet we used to feed him.
Killing 14 animals, no matter how few that is in the grand scheme, does not a good track record make. Suppose that were 14 kids. Pets = Children to many, many people, or at least family member. Argh, screw those bleeping bleeps!
And as for food for humans not being any better, that's the reason we stopped eating at chain restaurants, eliminated as much processed foods as we can, buy fresh, organic and local whenever possible, buy our meat/eggs without nitrates, grain fed, free range, etc. We're not freaks about it but I'm pretty sure that I've already extended life possiblities by ten years by doing so. I'm pissed at myself that I never thought about kitty's food in the same way. He shouldn't be eating food with all that crap in it, but since it was vet recommended I never really thought twice about it. Not taking any chances with that any more. If he died because of something I fed him, regardless of the circumstance, I would be a complete and utter wreck.
we've always given our cats organic food. thanks to marie who has pretty strong feelings about it (for people and animals).
but, funny enough, we have had discussions about letting the cats outside. one (oyster) just stays on the deck outside because he won't jump down from the gate. so he's OK. romeo, on the hand, is quite the adventurer and will go for hours and hours. i worry about this because many vets say that letting your cats out in a city is one of the most dangerous things a cat owner can do. still. romeo whines for hours if we don't let him out. it's also about quality of life: he is just a happier cat when he's able to go out, despite the risks.
but i agree that feeding your cat is different. i mean, the point is that you want to minimize the risks, and if you can stop feeding them tainted food, then DO IT. romeo could get in a fight and be injured. but keeping him inside locked up doesn't seem to be an option. feeding him clean and safe food is something easy enough to do!
