A little roundup of miscellaneous things.
- I have a post about the recipient of the EMC Leadership Award at the Computerworld Honors-- Laura Campbell from the Library of Congress.
- I have a snippet from my book about the world's first gourmand, Apicius, if you want to check it out and tell me what you think.
- Since summer is nearly here, I wanted to share a tasty cocktail, created entirely by me. Even if you aren't a gin drinker (which I'm not) you should try it out--I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Joe and I were having an after dinner drink at our new favorite bar, the redesigned Rialto bar (we loved the old one but the new one is much much better). We sat down next to an Asian gentleman who, we found out, looked 20 years younger than he was.
There is something wonderful about being at a bar and meeting people. The man we sat next to at the bar, whose name was Percy, lived in Australia but had a business in Malaysia. He had no accent, because he grew up in New York (although he was born in the Philippines) and went to college at Babson. WOW. Right there is some interestingness. He was full of wonderful, intriguing stories. He hadn't been back to Boston in nearly 35 years. His sister settled here as well at some point, but something happened 35 years ago that caused him to cut her out of his life (we didn't discover the source of that but I was highly curious!). He had decided that he would find it in his heart to put their differences in the past. Although he hadn't seen or spoken to her in 35 years he came to see her. He had been staying with her for many weeks and was amazed at how easy it was for the two of them to be together, as though they had been talking all along. I asked him if he wished now that he had not gone so long without talking and he agreed that yes, that was the case. He wanted to write a book about the experience.
We talked about politics, real estate, traveling, business, mobile technology, you name it. He even bought me a glass of wine. It was a wonderful conversation. Eventually, he departed to head up to the Regattabar to see his favorite jazz musician, Ahmad Jamal, play. He has been a fan for the last 40 years and was really looking forward to the show.
It was one of those evenings where I just felt like the world became a lot larger and more welcoming. I wish that there were more of these types of meetings in people's lives and I definitely hope many more in mine.
It's true. Project 365 has fallen by the wayside. I just FORGET. And after 3-4 days of forgetting or taking pictures at the last moment in the day just to say I took something, well, I'll just stick to taking pictures as I think about it. But I have scored some interesting shots over the last couple of weeks, so here is my last almost-365 post.
Chihuly glass sculpture at Mohegan Sun. They finally cleaned it. When I saw it last it was covered in the most disgusting layer of yellow gray smoke crud. I used to work at a bottle supply company that Chihuly used to buy containers to mix his paints. He would always send a cab driver over to get the delivery which I thought was so strange.
Last week we went to the Blue Room for dinner and it was a beautiful snowy picture with the lights everywhere and even a full moon.
This was the scene from my window during the day...
One of Joe's older pieces that we have on the wall in the dining room...
And finally, the loverkitty, Romeo, looking for a big belly rub...
Put the two together and you have the latest Project 365 photos from me.
The first photo is the reflection in my wine glass. My computer and the wall behind it which is covered with postcards.
Well they would have said that last Thursday when Joe turned older. I made a cake for him yesterday, and also snagged day 23 of Project 365:
Some pics...of friends Ryan and Carol, Martin with Joe, the pate, olives and chorizo, Jess in her amazing super cool furry hat, the cake, the very yummy rose champagne we drank and since I missed a picture of the cake with the candles, Ryan created a fun substitute with the rest of his cake. Joe's cousin Jeff also came but I don't have a great picture of him in the batch.
Here's the Project 365 round up for the week.
Day 13: This is the view from my cube. Sigh. Our office actually has windows all the way around every floor so it does have a lot of light. I just happened to end up on the wall with the main support section which means I get less window. I suppose that's okay. It means I have to get up and walk around to check out any turkeys that appear in the parking lot.
Day 15: It was FUHREEZING on Friday. Here Romeo is very very happy that he wasn't outside in the 1 degree temperature when this picture was taken.
Day 16: And last night, taken at the bar of the Red House, which we go to here and there. I think our favorite bars in Harvard are probably the Red House, Rialto (but now it's undergoing renovations so who knows if we'll like it later) and our new favorite, the bar at Harvest. Occasionally we also hang out at Grendel's but it just depends on whether or not we're up for dealing with lots of rich snotty Harvard kids. Hehe at the other bars we're just dealing with other rich snotty Harvard people. ;) Anyway, I really like how this particular shot turned out. My camera batteries had given out earlier so I was relying on my camera phone which takes great day shots but the flash is the pits. I think that worked out better in this case...
A year ago yesterday I posted about Paku the panda. Well, my dear friend Greg went on a trek to find me one! Paku traveled all over the world to get to me starting in a little store in Harujuku. Greg snapped this picture of the beginning of his journey. Note the little panda getups the store girls have.
"thingz getting out of hand, but i should make it through bangkok very soon. got myself hooked up in this den of iniquity 'somewhere' in the mekong triangle but i've almost managed to extricate myself from it. possibly if we're optimistic. more later, chin up."
Then in September, Greg snapped this picture "he wakes up with terrible cotton mouth....on a WEDNESDAY, no less!" Note the eye mask...poor Paku.
But today, he showed up on my doorstep!! Paku arrived ready for winter, complete with little pink scarf and pink mittens on a string (with little gold paw prints on them, LOL!) Just in time for Project 365 Day 011 pics! Romeo in particular LUVS his new little friend. Greg, thanks for keeping him safe for the last year. :)
Who knows what new adventures Paku will have in Boston!
First off, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Greg!! He's only six months older than me so I can't get down on him too much for how old he's getting. :-)
Last night we began the end of 2006 with a five course dinner at one of our favorite places, Craigie Street Bistro. It was excellent, as always. Joe had cock's comb in one of his dishes, which I didn't really like too much--the taste was fine but the texture was a bit strange. Who knew that rooster hats turned a weird pale jelly grey when you cook them? I had quail stuffed with blood sausage, which was great, but I have to admit that the blood sausage was probably something I could have taken or left. The little quails came cut in half, butt down on one part of the plate and legs up on the other, with the little claws all curled up. Was a stunning plating and I should have whipped out the camera but well, in such a nice place I felt like that might be a bit rude. All in all though, it was a really wonderful way to have the last meal of the year.
Afterwards, we went over to a friend's and had a really mellow evening hanging out and watching Dick Clark drop his balls (as Joe puts it). Joe has a billion different ways to talk about Ryan Seacrest...Secrust, Ryan Semen and the list deteriorates from there.
We started with a little bit of red sparkling Cava from Spain, Aria, which I found to be really delicious.
After that we graduated to some other sparklers that I wasn't terribly keen on, to tell the truth, but that's just because I'm picky, I suppose. We had a bottle of Mumm in the fridge that we almost brought and probably should have. Yum.
So the new year rang in pleasantly, among friends.
The one downside...while I have recovered from the horrid food poisoning (that's what I ultimately think it was since Joe never got it), my stomach really isn't back to normal and throwing all that champagne on top of very rich food has left my guts in a way that isn't quite gentle or kind. Which means that I very ungraciously backed out of Paulette's New Year's brunch, sigh. I hate when people bag out on me, so I always feel terrible when I end up canceling.
As for New Year's Resolutions? I have a few thoughts and maybe I'll articulate them later...
