Well that's what I thought when I saw it on the boarded-up door of the falling over shed on the lot next to our house. I was in my car, pulling out of my driveway and I saw the creature, huge and amazing, even though I was far enough away that I shouldn't be able to see most other species of its kind. I decided I needed a picture so I went to grab my camera.
The picture doesn't do it justice. I honestly had never seen any dragonfly quite so big--the body was about 5.5-6 inches long. I did some surfing this morning to figure out what it was. It looks to be similar to a Cordulegaster maculata or the Twin-Spotted Spiketail--but an abnormally large one apparently. The largest dragonfly in the country is a Giant Darner, found in Texas and only measures in at 4.3 inches. The markings on this dragonfly are the same as the Spiketail but the one pictured above has green spots, not yellow.
I was actually really nervous taking the picture. I know dragonflies can't bite or anything but this was such an incredibly large insect and I just didn't want the thing flying off and coming anywhere near me. I'm a scaredy-cat, I know.
